“Lucky guess,” said Diego.
“Not really,” said Melchor. Like Dimas, Melchor also wore a suit, though his wasn’t quite so dark, and he’d left the jacket unbuttoned to let his tie dangle freely. “I’ve known your grandmother for many years, Diego. She considers this castle to be the safest place in Sair. And if it were fully occupied, herself included, I might agree. But since that is not the case, I am certain that Red Lake is too vulnerable a place for the Elroy children at the moment.”
Having taken up a position between the two bodyguards, Joana responded for the group. “I suppose it just depends on who is coming to attack us.”
Melchor paused to look over his audience, letting his emerald eyes do most of the work while his head hardly moved.
The man’s reaper spoke up for him in a flat, dry voice. ‘We’re sensing a bit of hostility.’
“It’s nothing personal,” said Diego. “The Elroys have had a touch of bad luck with unexpected visitors, lately. You’ll have to excuse us if we’re not entirely thrilled to see you right now.”
‘Of course,’ the reaper said. ‘However, Melchor and I did come here by ourselves. If we wanted a fight, we would have brought backup.’
“We appreciate that,” said Diego. “And yet, here you now stand, in the middle of our castle with your eyes on the children. Perhaps you’re under the mistaken impression that you’re strong enough to kidnap them and fight your way out on your own.”
“Rather than that,” said Melchor, “we were hoping you would all return with us to Luzo. House Blackburn will protect the children while the siege is underway.”
“A generous offer,” said Joana, “but I think we will remain here at Red Lake.”
‘Please reconsider,’ said Melchor’s reaper. ‘We have reason to believe that Captain General Parson Miles will be here within the hour with a siege party of his own.’
That left an unsettled quiet in its wake.
‘You do not have the strength here to repel him. But with the full might of the Blackburns behind you, he will be no threat.’
“Why would Parson be coming here when Rheinhal is under attack?” asked Joana.
‘I cannot rightly say. Perhaps it is a testament to how badly the Vanguard wants to capture the Elroys, or perhaps they have reinforcements already en route. We have sent word to Octavia as well, so I’m sure she will be prepared for whatever happens.’
I'm getting mixed feelings about House Blackburn. Nobody seems to trust them entirely. On the other hand, they kind of did get stuck with a bit of a supervillain-y name. "Who're those guys? Oh, they're the ominouscolourassociatedwithevil-fireanddestructionsymbolisms. Nice people. You ever tried Melchior "Creepy Biblical Name" Blackburn's apple crumble? He's a freaking genius with a casserole dish, that's all I can say. It's to DIE for. Mwahahahaha, you know?"
ReplyDeletePart of me started wondering if they are in contact with the elusive Gema (sp?). If she knew the higher ups would be after her not going to her family makes sense but not getting any help doesn't. Being forewarned the Blackburn household could stay out of the pending conflict until they could make an important or decisive difference because their involvement at that point could catch the vanguard schemers off guard. It also feels about time that the conflict broke open a little. With Hector getting involved because of Garovel's sister? I suspect he will eventually have house guests after all there has to be some reason he got such an interesting castle.
ReplyDeleteFor the access to the underworld.
ReplyDeleteTo Forge the one Ring.
Now the real question is Emiliana going to like(fall for) Hector at all or is she going to hate him?
ReplyDeleteHonestly I have no time for Emiliana. She was a liability and her brother got caught because of it.
ReplyDeleteCome on its fun to speculate and besides since Hector is knight-like, Emiliana might fall for him since he seems to be her type.
ReplyDeleteShe's also a thirteen year old girl...I'm not saying that she can't be useful, but she's got an excuse when she isn't.
ReplyDeleteI feel bad saying this, but (since she is a mutation type who has already changed part of her face) I think she might be the first girl Hector feels comfortable around.
ReplyDeleteHer lack of abilities did not make her a liability only her personality.
ReplyDeleteHer parents are just as bad or were.
She has the potential to grow but she hasn't got her priorities right.
She was better prepared than Hector and in a better mind set.
Yes he gets nervous around any sentient being, but I thought he was even worse with girls. I was thinking Emiliana might only make him as nervous as an average stranger would. Of course, it is also very likely that neither of them say a word when they meet each other. Instead the conversation will be carried on by the reapers.
ReplyDeleteEven so, she's lost her mother, gotten a raw deal (at least at first) power wise, is being hunted by forces she barely understands, and her father is currently being held as half of a deep-frozen head.
ReplyDeleteso no one here thinks that Emiliana might fall for Hector, just that she might befriend him? Or Do you guys think she might hate him? What about a sidekick?
ReplyDeleteIt's crossed my mind but if I am being honest I think seeing Hector with Lynn would be more interesting. Servant and Servant is obviously doable, but Servant and What-ever Lynn is ... . That or since we currently have older and younger we will get one the same age as.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason everyone keeps forgetting that Emiliana already has a boyfriend. To be honest, I can't even remember his name and I can't find him on the characters page, but he does exist.
ReplyDeleteAlex Belos.
ReplyDeleteShe has had her abilities longer than Hector.
ReplyDeleteI blame her parent s as much as I do her.
Emiliana? No, she's only been a servant for a few weeks. Hector's been one for seven months.
ReplyDeleteSmall correction. Emiliana is fourteen. She received a reaper the day after her birthday.
ReplyDeleteWhoops. Thought the creepy murder-revivication rainlord ritual was at thirteen, not fourteen.
ReplyDeleteDidn't forget just disregarded. The way I see it there are two routes for him, one he is as trashy as he seems and gets exposed, or he isn't and he dies. Either way I don't expect him to stay in the picture. Of course it is always possible but it mostly seems pointless.
ReplyDeleteSeeing as Frosty is a man with a plan, I doubt that he'd introduce a character just to kill him off the next time he appears. I'd wager he'll reappear at some point in a somewhat important role even if we have to wait a couple hundred pages for it. And I really, really hope that he'll be accepting of Emiliana's appearance because the girl has been through enough already.
ReplyDeleteThanks. :)
ReplyDeleteStrange thing is every second i spent reading Melchior dialogue i heard a faint "rains of castamere" on my head, lets see if my castemere senses work or not
ReplyDeleteemiliana is the character i dislike the most
ReplyDeleteHector does not get nervous based on looks. He is just nervous around people of anykind. hell If there was a talking bear he would probably be nervous and shy around that.
