The first e-book is now available for free

Hey, all. So I finally finished organizing the first three story arcs into the Volume One e-book. You can download it over at Smashwords (EDIT: and now also Amazon). And it's free, so. Yeah. Go grab it, if you like.

I wanted to put it on Amazon, too, but I was surprised to find that Amazon doesn't actually allow you to make your e-book free. I would've had to price it at $0.99, which caused me a bit of debate for a while, but I ultimately decided to just go with Smashwords for now. When Volume Two rolls around (which will be fairly soon), I'll be putting that up on both sites for $2.99.

Also, I posted a new page earlier, just in case you missed it. Thanks for reading, everyone.

  2. You might want to look into LaTeX for publishing. It's a pain to learn, but the output is so ridiculously pretty. LaTeX isn't that difficult for text-only anyway, and you can do awesome things like automatic table of contents, nifty headers and footers and stuff like that.

  6. I'll be honest, I've been trying to push the series on my friends lately, with limited success. Can't believe you haven't been asked to publish in an actual paper book yet, but I hope you do.

  8. Will you put volume one on Amazon when you do volume two?

  9. I suppose I could, but it'd have to be priced at $0.99 because of Amazon's minimum pricing policy. That feels like kind of a ripoff, considering I've already made it available for free on Smashwords.

  10. Haha, well, on the plus side, I retain all my publishing rights this way. And thank you for telling your friends about the story. :)

  11. Just put a link in the product description saying download volume 1 before you buy for free at ... Giving them a free book and getting them hooked.

  12. If I remember correctly, you can put it for .99$ and then ask people to use the "tell us about a lower price" button. Theoretically, they should match the Smashwords price.

If that doesn't work... rail against money-grubbing companies that don't want to sacrifice their cut, I guess.

  13. I've heard this as well, but I don't know if Amazon is still doing it. Also, even if Amazon IS doing it, as I understand, it would still take a while for them to match the price.

I dunno. I might give it a shot. If folks want me to. I do want to have Vol 1 available on Amazon as well, if only because it'd be weird to have the sequels there without the beginning that they belong to.

  15. I would just like to say that I think you are a very good writer. I would pay to read your stories. That being said, I sure do appreciate not having to pay. Keep it coming!!!

  17. Amazon is the Wal-mart of e-books. They have some pretty disgusting requirements and tactics to control the market and whoever publishes with them. I am not a 'blame the corporation' person by nature but after a few early policy discoveries, I decided I would publish NOTHING with them until their tactics changed.

So let me know if they aren't still requiring you to set a lower price than any other venues selling your book if you want to get 70% royalties.
