So basically, I want to write this serial full time for you folks, and donations can make that possible. That's the dream, anyway. But if we're talkin' hard numbers, then that means I would need make at least $1,500 a month, when all is said and done. That'd give me annual earnings of $18,000--which, yeah, would mean I'd be living extremely modestly, but hey, as long I'm able to pay my bills while doing what I love, I'd be okay with that. I mean, I wouldn't stop trying to grow from there, of course; I'm just saying that's a goal, of sorts.

Regardless, I do realize that $1,500 is still quite a lot to be aiming for, right now. Currently, every time donations pass $500, I will post five pages on the following Saturday, which would otherwise serve as my day off. Or in other words, instead of posting 10 pages that week, I'd post 15.

And yeah, I know $500 is a bit high, but the Contribution System (detailed here) offers a way for people to donate time/effort and have that count toward the $500 threshold via "Hector Bucks." So it's not really $500 that I'm asking for. It's just passion. Like what my ex-girlfriend wanted from me. I DIDN'T HATE YOU, JANET. I HATED GOING DANCING.

--OR--

Current progress: $508.00 of $500.00 threshold [$50 + $78 from January Patreon + 380 Hector Bucks]

+$80 pledged for February Patreon

Next bonus day: Saturday, February 25th, 2017.
Last time I checked donation total: Thursday, February 23nd, 2017

  5. Hey I do have one question, what would your reaction be like if someone donated like a $100?

    1. Wow, sorry, I never saw this comment.

My reaction would roughly be, "Wow, awesome! Wait... That means I have to do... FUCK! But no, that's still awesome. BUT FUCK! BUT HOORAY."

Yeah, $100 would be pretty crazy. Honestly, I'm still kinda shocked whenever I receive any donations at all.

    2. Well I love the story and I hope others keep donating as well to keep it running.

    3. Haha, I hope so, too.

Admittedly, I wasn't expecting anyone to just come in and donate the whole $50 at once. I thought it'd just accumulate slowly, maybe a few bucks at a time, but haha, this is cool, too.

    4. When this is finished will you publish it?

    5. I'll publish it in a series of ebooks as I get more and more written, but I don't intend to finish the story any time soon. There are so many things I want to do with it first. I do have an ending in mind, but I don't plan on getting there for at least five years. Maybe ten. It's hard to tell at this point. I've been doing this for over a year already, but narratively-speaking, I still consider it to be early days.

    6. That means I'll be 30 at the very earliest. ;_;
But what if people keep donating? A lot? Would you get there sooner?

Something else I was wondering: I think you could make some good money publishing. I've read a LOT of books in my life (not sure if my Animorphs years count), but this is the first online book I've ever read- that I've ever even heard of. A lot more people still read print books than online ones, and if you're all about reaching more people and make a living.. wouldn't that be the way? You could just publish what you've got as part of a series and continue adding to it. But I'm guessing you'd maybe lose your rights to post it free and update every day. I don't know. I'm just wondering I guess. Maybe I like money too much. ._.

Also, it's pretty wild that I'm talking to the AUTHOR! (omg omg!!)

    7. I probably could get there a little sooner with more donations. I mean, just speaking practically, if writing this serial were my full-time job, then yeah, I'd be able to put even more time into it.

Getting with print publishing company is a different animal. But the main reason I started publishing TZK this way is because it helped to actually WRITE it, which is, y'know, kinda important. The constant deadlines help motivate me to constantly write. If I'd tried to do the whole thing at once before searching for a publisher, I'm honestly not sure I would have been able to do it, certainly not within a reasonable timeframe.

Also, publishing companies... kind of suck. It's a pain in the ass to get them to look at your manuscript due the sheer volume of stories they receive, and from what I've seen, they don't really do much to help you promote your story, either.

DOUBLE ALSO, I just think TZK works much better as a serialized story than as a book series of indeterminate length. It's more expansive. Allows me to do bigger things without losing the reader's attention or trust.

    8. Ok, I was just wondering. I'm just surprised a story like this is free for everyone. If I ever strike it rich I'll keep you in mind. n_n

Have you thought about doing an "About the Author" page? You know, for curious readers.

    9. Nah, I don't need a page about me. I like my relative anonymity. 'skinda fun.

    10. It would be the end of days.you have some pretty obsessed fans, not saying they are the kidnap and keep you in the basement and force you to write type but I'm not saying they are not either *smiles*.
Sorry for the double post Google would not let me comment so I became Anonymous Frightening right.

  7. One of these days we should all get together and donate a massive amount all at once. We'd time it out so it all comes in on the same day and make him do three chapters a day for months.

  8. Threw 25 into the pot, since that's what I'd pay for a good hardcover. And though that would probably be my ideal, I must say I am liking the concept of getting to continue the story consistently as opposed to waiting for a new novel release. Either way, impressive work, I enjoy the personalities and banter quite a bit. Cheers mate~

  11. A couple webcomics I read use Patreon, it seems to work out really well for them, and it's easy for me to see how many patrons they have, what the incentives are, which milestones have been reached, which one is next, etc. I guess it's a little more visual. Have you ever thought about it? I'd like to donate, I am just a little unsure of how things are going here. NOT to be offensive or anything! I love your writing and I hope to donate someday soon.

  12. This is a rather private question and you of course dont have to respond but am quite curious as I am also an author of some sort. Are donations a sustainable income/ how much money have you gotten over the years of this work. Again don't have to answer just extremely curious, pardon me if this seems rude.

  13. Hi Author Guy, I just wanted to give you a suggestion of adding a donation bar to the side, like the one here for example (80$ represents how much for each new chapter, for you it would be 30$ for 3 pages?). Anyway the donation bar would be very visible and I guarantee you'll see an huge jump in donations.

    Cheers mate

P.S.: can't comment with wordpress here, it seems to be broken.

  14. Ptreon ks awesome for some of the authors I read. I know D D web gets about 50$ a week for the gods are bastards through patreon, and its nearly guaranteed. Their serial is a lot newer too, likely with a smaller reaader base

  19. 600 to 700 readers can't be right. A fraction of people who comment make up ones readers. I know since I write of RRL, and you get dozens of comments almost ever chapter and when you disappeared you got hundreds. If you really have so few fans I seriously recommend you do some serious PR, or join a established site.

Getting on Wuxiaworld would increase readership by thousands and you get a percentage of ad revenue. The site gets so many views per day, month, and year that ad sponsors sometimes think they are cheating the view counts somehow and WuxiaWorld had to buy a program to prove they were for real. That's how you know you have a popular site.

They don't restrict genre as well for original works and you don't have to shutdown this site which I like a lot. I think they test original works on the forum, but with a long running Zombie Knight you should be able to join the main site very quickly. They also look for somewhat consistent updates when adding a original work to the WuxiaWorld Main page. This site is also becoming a serious translation site having gained actual permission to translate works from China, so it's worth checking out.

On a site that host many popular stories it's easy to find readers looking for something new. That's all I know and I hope it helps you towards making Zombie Knight something you can live on since it's my favorite original novel and is in my top 5 overall novels.

  20. Please set up Patreon. I just realized paypal allows monthly donations, but I'd much rather manage my monthly donations in one place.

Also I can't see what paypal fees would be if I donated something like $2 a month. Depending on how you set it up, it could be as much as 17%. Patreon takes 5% plus credit card fees which works a lot better for regular small donations.

    1. Yeah, I'm planning on do that. I actually made a patreon a while ago, and I just haven't gotten around to doing all the setup. BUT I'LL TRY AND DO IT SOON. I SWEAR, PROBABLY.

    2. Well, I mean, it's only $2 a month... but that's like a whole $24 a year! so... you know, that's like 2 whole meals!
