It's "rather" and "more like... than..." which are being used together. "Rather" is an intensifier, while "more like... than..." is comparative. <br /><br />It's true that the sentence would make sense without "rather," but that's not the point. The sentence "He ate a very good sandwich" would also make sense without the "very."<br /><br />Ultimately, it's just a stylistic thing.
